I Love You Mom (Lyrics)

Peter Oye Sagay © 2005

It seems like yesterday
That most I offered you
Were long sleepless nights
Shrieks that pierced the still nights
Bundles of worries untold
Through it all, you gave much love
You kept the mother in you
That's why always, I Love You Mom.

It seems like yesterday
That my bold escapades
Were thorns in your flesh
The rebellion and rifts
Impatience with your wisdom
Through it all, you gave much love
You kept the mother in you
That's why always, I Love You Mom.

The joys I gave you
My first word, my first step
My bright smile and bright laugh
Huge hugs filled with love
Comradeship and gifts
Companion in thought
Not sufficient rewards
Insufficient rewards
For your priceless Love
For your fervent prayers
So, mom always, I Love You Mom.

In the summer of 2004, I visited my mother's compound in Sapele Delta state, Nigeria. It was my first visit after her death. I stayed until the fall of 2004. The visit was emotional in various ways. In the spring of 2005, still filled with emotions and recovering from malaria, I sat at the piano and composed I Love You Mom in our flat in Heltersberg, Germany.

Peter Oye Simate Sagay: Simate was my mother, Sagay was my father.
